Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Goat Format and Goat World Community

Getting Started

What is Goat Format?

+

Goat Format is a popular Yu-Gi-Oh! retro format that uses the April 2005 Forbidden & Limited List and card pool. It's named after the iconic Scapegoat card and is beloved for its strategic depth, balanced gameplay, and nostalgic appeal. The format features classic cards like Airknight Parshath, Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, and Thousand-Eyes Restrict.

How do I join Goat World Community?

+

Join our Discord server using the invite link, then run the /welcome command to set up your profile. This registers you in our system, lets you join the ranked ladder queue, and enter tournaments. The process takes less than 2 minutes.

What platform do matches use?

+

All Goat World matches are played on EDOPro or DuelingBook. Most players prefer EDOPro for its automation and replay features. You submit your deck as a YDKE code, and our bot validates it against the Goat Format banlist before each match.

Is Goat World free to join?

+

Yes! Goat World is completely free to join. The ranked ladder, most tournaments, and community features cost nothing. Some premium events like Sit-N-Go pods require GW Coins entry fees, but you earn those through regular play—no real money required.

Where can I play Goat Format?

+

Goat World provides 24/7 online matchmaking through Discord with ranked ladders, Sit-N-Go pods, and weekly tournaments accessible from anywhere in the world. We also host live events at partner venues — visit our play page or events calendar for in-person Goat Format meetups near you.

Ranked Ladder & Matchmaking

How does the ranked ladder work?

+

Use the /join_queue command to enter matchmaking. Our system pairs you with a similarly-rated opponent within minutes. After your match, report the result with /report_loss (the loser reports). Your Elo rating updates automatically, and you earn GW Coins based on performance.

What is my Elo rating and how is it calculated?

+

Your Elo rating starts at 1200 and changes based on match results. Beating higher-rated players gains more points; losing to lower-rated players costs more. We use a modified Glicko-2 system with K-factor adjustments for new players. Your global rating persists across seasons, while season ratings reset periodically.

What is Ladder Fiesta?

+

Ladder Fiesta is a special weekend event where ladder matches award bonus GW Coins and contribute to event-specific leaderboards. It's a great time to grind rating and earn extra rewards. Events are announced in Discord and on the Events page.

Can I rematch the same opponent?

+

Our system has anti-rematch protection. After playing someone, you won't be paired with them again for a cooldown period (typically 30 minutes to 1 hour). This ensures variety and prevents farming.

Tournaments & Events

What tournament formats are available?

+

Goat World hosts Swiss tournaments (everyone plays a set number of rounds), single/double elimination brackets, and Sit-N-Go pods (4-player mini-tournaments). We also run special formats like King of the Hill and the 3v3 League for team play.

What is a Sit-N-Go (SNG)?

+

Sit-N-Go is a quick 4-player tournament that starts automatically when 4 players join the queue. Entry costs 500 GW Coins, and the prize pool is 1500 GWC split among top finishers. It's perfect for players who want competitive action without committing to a full tournament.

How do I register for a tournament?

+

Use the /register command followed by the tournament name or ID. You'll need to submit a valid YDKE deck code. For some events, you may need WSOG tickets or GW Coins for entry. Check the tournament announcement for specific requirements.

What are freeroll tournaments?

+

Freeroll tournaments have no entry fee—they're completely free to join. We host weekend freerolls regularly where you can win GW Coins and WSOG qualification tickets just by participating and performing well.

Are there live in-person Goat Format events?

+

Yes! Goat World organises live tournaments at partner card shops and gaming lounges. Our flagship event, the Goat World Gran Prix (GWGP), takes place at DeckLounge in Faenza, Italy. More venues are being added across Europe. Visit the play page to find in-person Goat Format events near you.

GW Coins & Rewards

What are GW Coins (GWC)?

How do I earn GW Coins?

+

The main ways to earn GWC are: winning ladder matches (20-50 GWC per win), tournament placements (varies by event), completing daily/weekly missions, winning mini-games like the Daily Card Game, and participating in special events like Ladder Fiesta.

What can I spend GW Coins on?

+

Visit the GW Shop to redeem coins for real Yu-Gi-Oh! cards (verified sellers), official merchandise, coaching from top players, Sit-N-Go entries, exclusive event tickets, and partner store vouchers. New items are added regularly.

Can I win real prizes?

+

Yes! Beyond GW Coins, top performers can win physical Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, gaming hardware (like Nintendo Switch 2), merchandise, and cash prizes at major events. The World Series of Goat championship has a $5,000+ prize pool.

World Series of Goat (WSOG)

What is the World Series of Goat?

+

The World Series of Goat (WSOG) is Goat World's premier championship event with a $5,000+ prize pool. It features the best Goat Format players from around the world competing for the title of World Champion. WSOG 2026 qualification is currently underway.

How do I qualify for WSOG?

+

Earn WSOG tickets through various qualifier events: weekend freerolls, special qualifier tournaments, ladder season championships, and partner events. Accumulate enough tickets to secure your spot in the championship. Check the qualification system page for current paths.

What are Slifer, Ra, and Obelisk qualifiers?

+

These are the three tiers of WSOG qualifier events, named after the Egyptian God Cards. Slifer events are entry-level qualifiers, Ra events are mid-tier with better rewards, and Obelisk events are premium qualifiers with the most tickets at stake.

Rules & Gameplay

What cards are banned in Goat Format?

+

Goat Format uses the April 2005 Forbidden & Limited List. Banned cards include Yata-Garasu, Chaos Emperor Dragon, Imperial Order (errata not applied), and others. The Limited list includes staples like Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, Pot of Greed, and Graceful Charity.

Are there any house rules?

+

Goat World follows standard April 2005 rulings with minimal house rules. Key points: original card text applies (no erratas), priority works as it did in 2005, and we use the TCG card pool. Check our Game Rules page for the complete ruleset.

What happens if there's a dispute?

+

Contact a Judge or Admin in Discord. We have a dedicated team of verified judges who resolve disputes fairly. For rating adjustments or match corrections, admins can use the fix system. All decisions are logged for transparency.

Are replays required?

+

Yes, replays are required for all ranked matches. They're used to verify results and resolve disputes. EDOPro automatically saves replays—just make sure you submit the replay URL when reporting your match. Failure to provide replays may result in penalties.

3v3 League & Team Play

What is the 3v3 League?

+

The 3v3 League is a team-based competition where teams of 3 players compete in weekly round-robin fixtures. Each match consists of 3 individual duels (one per player), and the team with 2+ wins takes the match. It's a great way to play with friends and experience team strategy.

How do I create or join a team?

+

Team captains can create a team using the /team_create command. To join an existing team, the captain invites you via /team_invite and you accept. Teams need exactly 3 active members to participate in league fixtures.
