Global vs Season Ratings

Understanding the dual rating system: permanent skill measurement and competitive seasonal races

Two Ratings, One Player

Goat World tracks two separate ratings for each player: a permanent global rating and a seasonal ladder rating. These work together to provide both long-term skill measurement and exciting short-term competition.

Both ratings start at 1200 and use the same Elo formula, but they serve different purposes, reset at different times, and are affected by different game modes.

๐ŸŒGlobal Rating: Your Permanent Skill

Your global rating is your universal skill measurement across all Goat World competitive formats. It never resets and reflects your entire competitive history.

Key Characteristics

  • Permanent: Never resets, tracks lifetime skill progression
  • K-Factor: 16 (stable, after 20 provisional games)
  • Affected by: ALL game modes (Ladder, Challenge, SNG, Tournaments, future modes)
  • Leaderboard: Global top 200 displayed at /rankings/global
  • Purpose: Long-term skill measurement and matchmaking

How It Changes

Every competitive match in Goat World affects your global rating:

  • Ladder matches: Full rating change (ยฑ8-15 points typical)
  • Challenge duels: Full rating change (Bo11 format)
  • SNG pods: Slightly reduced impact (~K=12)
  • Tournament matches: Full rating change per round

Global Leaderboard

The global leaderboard displays the top 200 players ranked by rating. Tie-breaking uses games played (fewer is better):

ORDER BY rating DESC, gamesPlayed ASC

No minimum games requiredโ€”even new players appear if their rating reaches the top 200.

Philosophy: Global rating is your true skill measurement. It accounts for every competitive match you've ever played, creating a comprehensive view of your ability across all formats.

๐Ÿ“…Season Rating: Competitive Ladder Races

Your season rating is a fresh competitive rating that resets each season. It creates exciting short-term races and gives everyone a chance to compete for seasonal rewards.

Key Characteristics

  • Resets: Every new season, back to 1200 rating
  • K-Factor: 32 (twice as volatile as global)
  • Affected by: Ladder matches ONLY
  • Leaderboard: Top 50 displayed per season at /rankings/seasonal
  • Purpose: Short-term competition, seasonal rewards, fresh starts

Qualification Requirements

To appear on the seasonal leaderboard, you must meet the minimum match threshold:

50 Matches

You must complete at least 50 Ladder matches in the current season to qualify for the seasonal rankings.

This prevents rating inflation from players who only play a few matches, ensuring the leaderboard represents sustained competitive performance.

Seasonal Leaderboard Sorting

The seasonal leaderboard uses a three-tier tie-breaking system:

1. Rating (highest first)

2. Wins (most wins first)

3. Games Played (fewest games first)

If two players have the same rating, the one with more wins ranks higher. If wins are also tied, the player with fewer total games (higher win rate) ranks higher.

Why higher volatility? K=32 means seasonal ratings change faster, creating more dramatic climbs and falls. This makes each season feel fresh and allows skilled players to quickly establish themselves.

โณLadder Decay System

To keep the seasonal ladder competitive and active, season ratings are subject to decay based on recent activity. Global ratings never decay.

Decay Formula

If you play fewer than 7 Ladder matches in the past 7 days:

Penalty = (7 - matches_last_7_days) ร— 15

Examples:

โ€ข 6 matches in 7 days โ†’ -15 rating

โ€ข 4 matches in 7 days โ†’ -45 rating

โ€ข 0 matches in 7 days โ†’ -105 rating

Decay Rules

  • Only affects season rating: Global rating never decays
  • Minimum floor: Season rating cannot drop below 1200
  • Skip condition: If season rating is already below 1200, no decay is applied
  • Manual application: Admins trigger decay checks periodically
  • Ladder only: Only Ladder matches count toward activity

Preventing Decay

To avoid seasonal rating decay, maintain consistent Ladder activity:

  • Play at least 7 Ladder matches per week (1 per day)
  • Challenge, SNG, and Tournament matches do NOT count toward decay prevention
  • Decay is checked periodically, not in real-time
  • If you drop below 1200, decay stops until you climb back above

Design philosophy: Decay ensures top seasonal rankings reflectcurrent active players, not those who climbed early and stopped playing. It also prevents rating hoarding at the top of the leaderboard.

๐Ÿ“ŠPractical Example: Same Player, Two Ratings

Let's follow a player through different scenarios to see how global and seasonal ratings evolve independently:

Scenario 1: Season Start

Player Alex has 1650 global rating. A new season begins.

  • Global rating: 1650 (unchanged)
  • Season rating: Reset to 1200 (fresh start)

Scenario 2: Ladder Match Win

Alex plays Ladder and wins (+10 global, +20 season due to higher K-factor).

  • Global rating: 1660 (+10)
  • Season rating: 1220 (+20)
  • Both ratings increase, but season changes faster

Scenario 3: Challenge Match Win

Alex plays Challenge mode and wins (+12 global, no season change).

  • Global rating: 1672 (+12)
  • Season rating: 1220 (unchanged)
  • Only global rating is affected by non-Ladder modes

Scenario 4: Inactivity Decay

Alex plays only 2 Ladder matches in the past week. Decay is applied.

  • Decay penalty: (7 - 2) ร— 15 = -75 rating
  • Global rating: 1672 (no decay)
  • Season rating: 1145 (-75)
  • Only season rating decays; global remains permanent

Scenario 5: Next Season Reset

A new season begins after 3 months.

  • Global rating: 1672 (unchangedโ€”permanent)
  • Season rating: Reset to 1200 (fresh competition)
  • Alex keeps lifetime progress but starts seasonal race over

Key takeaway: Your global rating is your legacyโ€”it never resets and reflects all competitive play. Your season rating is your sprintโ€”it resets regularly, changes quickly, and rewards sustained activity.

๐ŸŽฏStrategic Considerations

Focus on What Matters to You

Different players optimize for different goals:

  • Global rating climbers: Play all modes, maximize match volume, focus on long-term improvement
  • Seasonal champions: Grind Ladder consistently, maintain 7+ matches/week, aim for top 50
  • Casual competitors: Play what's fun, global rating reflects overall skill naturally

Balancing Both Ratings

To climb both leaderboards simultaneously:

  • Play at least 7 Ladder matches per week to avoid decay
  • Mix in Challenge, SNG, or Tournament matches for global rating gains
  • Front-load seasonal grind early (higher K=32 means faster climbs)
  • Remember: global rating reflects true skill; seasonal rating reflects current activity
