What is Phase 2?
Phase 2 is the Finals stage of the World Series of Goat. After surviving the brutal elimination rounds of Phase 1, the remaining players compete in a Swiss tournament to determine seeding, followed by a single-elimination bracket to crown the World Champion.
Phase 2 typically consists of:
- Swiss Rounds (5-6 rounds): All qualified players compete in Swiss pairings to determine final standings
- Top Cut Bracket (Top 8): The top 8 players from Swiss advance to single-elimination playoffs
- Best-of-3 matches: Every match uses the same competitive best-of-3 format from Phase 1
- Prize distribution: All Top 8 finalists receive prize money, with the World Champion taking the largest share
Unlike Phase 1, there are no extra lives in the Top Cut bracketโone loss and you're out. This is the ultimate test of skill, nerves, and preparation.
Swiss Rounds Structure
๐ How Swiss Works
Swiss is a tournament format where players are paired against opponents with similar records each round. After 5-6 rounds, the players with the best records advance to Top Cut.
- No elimination: You play all Swiss rounds regardless of your record
- Match points: Win = 3 points, Draw = 1 point, Loss = 0 points
- Pairing system: Each round, you face someone with a similar record (e.g., 3-1 faces 3-1)
- Tiebreakers: If players tie on match points, standings are determined by opponent win percentage and game win percentage
- Seeding matters: Top seed in Top 8 gets the โeasiestโ bracket path
๐ Example Swiss Standings
After 5 rounds, the top 8 players advance to the bracket. Here's what a typical final Swiss standing might look like:
| Place | Player | Record | Points | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Player A | 5-0 | 15 | Top 8 |
| 2nd | Player B | 4-1 | 12 | Top 8 |
| 3rd | Player C | 4-1 | 12 | Top 8 |
| 4th | Player D | 4-1 | 12 | Top 8 |
| 5th | Player E | 3-2 | 9 | Top 8 |
| 6th | Player F | 3-2 | 9 | Top 8 |
| 7th | Player G | 3-2 | 9 | Top 8 |
| 8th | Player H | 3-2 | 9 | Top 8 |
| 9th | Player I | 3-2 | 9 | Eliminated |
| 10th | Player J | 2-3 | 6 | Eliminated |
Notice: Player I has the same 3-2 record and 9 points as players 5-8, but lost the tiebreaker. Every match matters in Swiss!
๐ก Swiss Strategy
- Don't tilt after a loss: You play all rounds regardlessโstay focused
- Know your matchups: By Round 4-5, you can predict the meta and adjust sideboard plans
- Manage time wisely: Swiss matches still have time limitsโpractice efficient play
- Tiebreakers matter: Sometimes it's not about going 5-0, but making sure your opponents win their other matches
- Seeding is crucial: The difference between 1st seed and 8th seed is huge for bracket placement
Top Cut Bracket (Top 8)
๐ Single-Elimination Playoffs
After Swiss rounds determine seeding, the Top 8 players advance to a single-elimination bracket. One loss and you're outโno second chances.
- Quarterfinals: 8 players โ 4 winners
- Semifinals: 4 players โ 2 finalists
- Finals: 2 players โ 1 World Champion
- Seeding advantage: 1st seed faces 8th seed, 2nd faces 7th, etc.
- Best-of-3 matches: Same competitive format as Phase 1
๐ Open Decklists in Top Cut
Decklists are open for the Top Cut bracket. All players advancing to the Top 8 must submit their complete decklist (main deck + sideboard), which will be made public before the bracket begins. This allows players to prepare specific strategies and sideboard plans for their potential opponents.

Yes, you can drop at any point during Swiss. However, you forfeit any potential prize placements outside Top 8 (some editions award participation bonuses or consolation prizes).
What happens if there's a draw in Swiss?
Draws award 1 match point to each player. While uncommon, draws can occur if time expires during a game. In Top Cut, matches continue until there's a winner (no time limit on bracket matches).

Phase 2 typically spans 1-2 weekends. Swiss rounds (5-6 rounds) may take place over one weekend, with Top Cut bracket scheduled for the following weekend to allow for preparation and hype building.
Can I change my deck between Swiss and Top Cut?

What if I win WSOG? Do I get another ticket for next year?
Yes! The World Champion automatically receives 1 WSOG ticket for the following year's championship as part of their title defense benefits. However, you can still earn additional tickets through other pathways.
