Phase 1 tests your resilience. Players with multiple tickets start with extra lives—lose all your lives and you're eliminated. Survive 5 matches and you advance to Phase 2 for the championship.
What is Phase 1?
Phase 1 is the elimination stage of WSOG where qualified players compete in 5 Swiss-paired matches. Unlike traditional single-elimination tournaments, Phase 1 uses an extra lives system—players start with a certain number of "lives" based on how many WSOG tickets they earned during qualification.
Key Mechanics:
- ●Swiss Pairing: Each round, you're paired against players with similar records (same number of wins/losses)
- ●Extra Lives: Lose a match, lose a life. Run out of lives = eliminated
- ●5 Matches Total: After 5 rounds, all remaining players (who haven't been eliminated) advance to Phase 2
- ●Best-of-3: Each match is best-of-3 games (first to 2 game wins takes the match)
💡 Think of Phase 1 as a high-stakes ladder climb: you need to survive 5 rounds without running out of lives. More tickets = more cushion for mistakes.
The Extra Lives System
Your starting lives depend on how many WSOG tickets you earned during qualification. This system rewards players who dominated multiple pathways throughout the year.
1 Ticket → 4-1 Minimum
High risk, high pressure—must play nearly perfect
How It Works:
- You have 1 life (your only ticket)
- You must go at least 4-1 (4 wins, 1 loss) to survive Phase 1
- Lose 2 matches = eliminated immediately
- Every match is critical—one bad matchup can end your WSOG run
⚠️ Warning: With only 1 ticket, you're on thin ice. Consider grinding more tickets next season for better odds.
2 Tickets → 3-2 Minimum
Moderate cushion—can afford one bad matchup
How It Works:
- You have 2 lives (2 tickets)
- You must go at least 3-2 (3 wins, 2 losses) to survive Phase 1
- Lose 3 matches = eliminated
- Much safer than 1 ticket—you can recover from an early loss
💡 Tip: 2 tickets is the "comfortable minimum"—you can afford to lose one match early and still have room to recover.
3 Tickets → 2-3 Minimum
Very safe—can lose majority of matches and still advance
How It Works:
- You have 3 lives (3 tickets)
- You must go at least 2-3 (2 wins, 3 losses) to survive Phase 1
- Lose 4 matches = eliminated
- Extremely forgiving—you only need 2 wins out of 5 matches
🎯 Sweet Spot: 3 tickets is ideal for most players—great survival odds without requiring insane qualification grind.
4 Tickets → 1-4 Minimum
Almost guaranteed—only 1 win needed to survive
How It Works:
- You have 4 lives (4 tickets)
- You must go at least 1-4 (1 win, 4 losses) to survive Phase 1
- You'd need to lose all 5 matches to be eliminated
- Virtual free pass to Phase 2—extremely hard to get knocked out
🏆 Elite Status: 4 tickets means you dominated qualification year-round. Phase 1 is basically a formality—you're almost guaranteed to advance.
5+ Tickets → Skip Phase 1 (BYE)
Ultimate reward—go straight to Phase 2 finals
How It Works:
- You automatically advance to Phase 2 without playing Phase 1
- No risk of early elimination—you start fresh in Swiss rounds
- Extra rest time to prepare decks and scout opponents
- Massive psychological advantage—enter Phase 2 with zero pressure
🌟 Legendary: Only the most dedicated players collect 5+ tickets. This is the ultimate reward for year-round dominance—skip the gauntlet entirely and rest while others battle.
Match Format & Rules
⏱️ Match Structure
- ●Best-of-3: First player to win 2 games takes the match
- ●Time Limit: 45 minutes per match (game 3 goes to time if needed)
- ●Side Deck: 15 cards allowed (standard Goat Format rules)
- ●Replay Submission: All matches must have Duelingbook replay URLs submitted
🎲 Pairing System
- ●Swiss Pairing: Each round pairs players with similar records
- ●No Rematches: You won't face the same opponent twice in Phase 1
- ●Lives Visible: You can see your opponent's remaining lives before the match
- ●Survival Pool: After 5 rounds, all non-eliminated players advance
Strategic Considerations
🎯 Deck Selection Based on Lives
Your ticket count should influence your deck choice:
🧠 Psychological Warfare
Lives are visible to opponents—use this information:
- ●If you have more lives: Play aggressive, high-variance lines. Your opponent is under more pressure—exploit it.
- ●If you have fewer lives: Play conservatively and force your opponent into mistakes. Every win is critical.
- ●Last life scenarios: If you're on your final life, play fearlessly—you have nothing left to lose.
📊 Meta Reading
Phase 1 is a meta snapshot—pay attention to opponent decks:
- ●Track what decks you face in Phase 1—this tells you the Phase 2 meta
- ●If you have 4+ tickets and auto-advance, scout Phase 1 results to prep for Phase 2
- ●Adjust side deck between Phase 1 and Phase 2 based on observed meta trends
Example Scenarios
🎮 Scenario 1: The Comeback
Player A has 2 tickets (2 lives). They lose their first 2 matches and are down to their final life—one more loss = elimination.
Matches 3-5: Player A goes on a 3-0 run, finishing 3-2. They advance to Phase 2 despite the rough start.
💡 Lesson: Never give up! Even with 1 life remaining, 3 straight wins can save your WSOG run. Stay focused and play your best.
⚔️ Scenario 2: The Greed Trap
Player B has 4 tickets (4 lives) and only needs 1 win to advance. They get cocky in round 1, try a meme deck, and lose.
Rounds 2-5: Player B continues experimenting, loses 4 more matches, and finishes 0-5. Despite having 4 tickets, they're eliminated.
⚠️ Lesson: Don't throw away lives carelessly. Even with 4 tickets, you can still get eliminated if you disrespect Phase 1.
🏆 Scenario 3: The Auto-Advance Advantage
Player C has 5 tickets and auto-advances to Phase 2. While other players battle in Phase 1, Player C uses the time to:
- Watch Phase 1 replays and identify the meta decks
- Refine their side deck to counter popular strategies
- Rest and prepare mentally for Phase 2
🌟 Lesson: Collecting 5+ tickets isn't just about skipping Phase 1—it's about entering Phase 2 with information and preparation advantages.
